Embracing the Universe

I received this email meditation from Henri Nouwen:

"Living a spiritual life makes our little, fearful hearts as wide as the universe, because the Spirit of Jesus dwelling within us embraces the whole of creation. Jesus is the Word, through whom the universe has been created. As Paul says: "In him were created all things in heaven and on earth: everything visible and everything invisible - all things were created through him and for him - in him all things hold together" (Collosians 1:16-17). Therefore when Jesus lives within us through his Spirit, our hearts embrace not only all people but all of creation. Love casts out all fear and gathers in all that belongs to God.

Prayer, which is breathing with the Spirit of Jesus, leads us to this immense knowledge."

I love this quote. The longer I sit here thinking about it, the deeper it goes. I will not begin to do it justice but here goes. Has your heart ever embraced all of creation? I believe mine does every time I witness a sunrise or sunset, a cardinal in the bird bath, a squirrel drinking from the pool, a rainbow, a brilliant pink calla lily I forgot I planted a year ago blooming in my garden, my big white dog playing with my friend's small black dog, clouds, a thunderstorm, rain on a sunny day... I could go on and on. It's when I "breath with the Spirit of Jesus" as I witness these things that the knowledge of His majesty becomes immense. Sometimes I forget to breathe and that's when I know I'm really getting it, when my "little, fearful heart becomes as wide as the universe". But here's the best part - "because the Spirit of Jesus dwelling within us embraces the whole of creation." It's not just me embracing creation. It's Christ in me, the hope of glory. Oh man, now I am trembling. May you come to know Him more immensely today and may you tremble at the reality of knowing.
